*Overview

-Asthma is a disease that negatively affects our lungs. If people get infected, their airways will narrow and swell, producing extra mucus. Asthma causes a repeated pattern of wheezing, breathlessness, chest tightness, and coughing. Asthma is very common and for some people, it is just a minor nuisance. However, this disease can be a major problem that interferes with our daily life activities, especially during exercises and may lead to a life threatening asthma attack. Asthma can not be cured, but we can control its symptoms.

*Causes

-There is no clear reason why people got infected with asthma. However, it is probably due to inherited and environmental factors

-Asthma triggers:

+Being exposed to certain chemical irritants or industrial dusts, +Having a severe respiratory infection

+Having allergic condition

+Cold air

+Certain medications (beta blockers, aspirin, anti-inflammatory drugs

+Poor mental health, strong emotions, stress

+Gastroesophageal reflux disease: a condition in which acids in stomach back up into the throat

+Harsh physical activity

+Ariborne allergens: pollen, dust mites, mold spores

*Symptoms

-The symptoms vary from person to person. We can either have frequent asthma attack or an occasional attacks such as when exercising

+Shortness of breath 

+Feeling exhausted and having chest pain or tightness 

+Breathing problems

+Coughing during nighttime and early morning

+Trouble sleeping because of wheezing or shortness of breath

-Asthma is problem worsening when we experience the signs and symptoms more frequent and bothersome. If you experience an increasing breathing difficulty or ineffectiveness of quick-relief inhaler, you should contact your doctor

*Risk factors

-There are some factors that might increase the chances of having asthma

+Havjng allergic condition which causes red red, itchy skin, runny nose, congestion and itchy eyes

+Being overweight

+Smoking and exposure to secondhand smoke

+Using drugs

+Exposure to exhaust fumes

+Pollutions

+Exposure to some triggers like chemicals used in farming, hairdressing, make-up, manufacturing

*Prevention

-There is no way to prevent asthma, but you should have a detailed plan to deal with your condition and prevent asthma attacks

+Follow doctor prescription and take your medication seriously

+It is alarming when you increase your time using quick-relief inhaler user

+Pay attention to your breathing pattern 

+Avoid any outdoor asthma triggers and irritants, ranging from pollen and mold to cold air and air pollution

+Get avaccinafed for influenza (flu) and pneumonia (lung inflammation)

*Complications

-Asthma signs and symptoms can really bother you in your daily activities. They will interfere with sleep, work, study and activities

-Might cause financial problems due to a large number of emergency room visits and hospitalizations for severe asthma attacks 

-Side effects from long-term use of medications used to treat severe asthma 

-A permanent narrowing of your trachea (tubes that carry air to originated from your lungs) can cause breathing problems
